Explore The Local Area & Amenities

Maltby offers all the amenities of a town but still retains the warmth and community feel of a village – something which is appealing to many people looking at new homes in Sheffield, Doncaster or Rotherham.

Maltby sprang from an ancient settlement which was first mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086.

The place was then known as Maltebi, meaning Malti’s homestead or village in Old Norse, and had 18 households but has now grown into a thriving town which is home to over 16,000 people.

Today, there’s a choice of well-regarded primary schools, while secondary education is provided within the town at Maltby Academy in Braithwell Road. Sixth form provision is offered at Post 16 MLT, which is based across two campuses, at Maltby Academy and at Sir Thomas Wharton Academy in Edlington.

When it comes to leisure pursuits, the town has plenty to offer. For those who want to exercise indoors there is Maltby Leisure Centre, which is open seven days a week, and has a swimming pool, a gym, a studio for fitness classes, a sports hall and a cafe for well-deserved post-workout treats.

People who like to exercise outside have a number of public green open spaces to choose from, including popular Coronation Park, which has tennis courts, a bowling green, a multi-use games area, grassy parkland and a children’s play area.

Those interested in the arts can indulge their passion at the Wesley Centre, which is home to live music, shows and events. Maltby Musical Theatre Group is based there and also runs ‘Maltby Minors’ – a group open to young people between the ages of nine and 21.

The bustling town centre has a range of shops, cafes and pubs with Aldi and Tesco supermarkets on hand for the all-important weekly shop.

Those in need of serious retail therapy can get their fix with a trip to Meadowhall in Sheffield – Yorkshire’s biggest shopping centre. The huge complex has more than 250 shops, 50 places to eat and drink and an 11-screen cinema.

An historic local landmark well worth a visit is Conisbrough Castle, which dates from the 12th Century and is just five miles away. The castle, which inspired Sir Walter Scott’s romantic novel Ivanhoe, is open daily. Its well-preserved keep offers a fascinating insight into history and dramatic views of the surrounding countryside, while there are also grassed areas where families can enjoy a picnic and children can let off steam.

When it comes to road links, Maltby is incredibly well connected as it lies between two motorways: the M18, which leads onto the A1(M) northbound and to the M1 southbound just two miles away, while the A1(M) is just five miles in the opposite direction.

For travelling further afield by train, Sheffield railway station has direct services to a host of destinations, including London St Pancras and Edinburgh Waverley, while Doncaster railway station has trains to London Kings Cross.

If you’re looking at new homes in Sheffield, Doncaster or Rotherham, Maltby could be the perfect place for you. To enjoy the benefits of living in this thriving South Yorkshire town with a village feel, find out more about our properties for sale at Lambcote Meadows.
