Explore The Local Area & Amenities
Eggborough is the perfect village for house-hunters looking at new homes in North Yorkshire, offering peaceful rural living within easy reach of bustling towns such as Pontefract and Selby and the historic city of York.
The village has a population of 2,400 and has historically been an agricultural community also serving the former Eggborough Power Station, which closed in 2018.
The local skyline was dominated for decades by the power station’s eight 300-foot cooling towers but these were demolished in 2021, while the taller chimney stack was brought down a year later.
Eggborough is home to a typically friendly Yorkshire community with the village hall very much the social hub. The hall is used on a regular basis by a number of organisations, including the 9th Selby (Kellington) Scouts, a toddler group, a sewing club, a youth club and a dog training group.
The village pub in Eggborough, the Horse and Jockey on Weeland Road, is also an important focal point, offering cask ales, hot food and a place for villagers to meet, socialise and catch up.
The health of local residents is catered for by the Whitley Bridge GP surgery on Selby Road, which is open on weekday mornings and Eggborough Pharmacy, open weekdays.
Well-regarded Whitley and Eggborough Community Primary School is located in Learning Lane for families with primary-age children, while for older pupils there are Selby High School and Brayton Academy in Selby, which are both highly thought-of secondary schools, and Selby College for sixth-form studies.
The historic and beautiful city of York is just over half an hour away by car, where you can step back in time inside the glorious York Minster, climb the steps to the wondrous Clifford’s Tower or learn all about horned helmeted invaders at the Jorvik Viking Centre.
York is not only a mecca for history-thirsty visitors – it also offers a wide range of independent shops, cafes, restaurants, bars and traditional pubs.
Meanwhile, for designer shopping, head to York Designer Outlet, which is about half an hour’s drive and has more than 100 shops offering cut-price deals on top labels.
For those who want to explore the great outdoors, just 12 miles away is Bishop Wood – a peaceful 835-acre expanse of mixed woodland where walkers and cyclists can de-stress and lose themselves in nature.
Whitley Bridge railway station, on the edge of Eggborough, offers a very limited service for trains to Leeds and Goole, but nearby Selby station offers a full timetable of direct trains to various destinations including London Kings Cross in about two hours as well as Manchester and Liverpool.
Road links, meanwhile, are excellent, with Eggborough lying near the crossroads of the A19 and M62. The A19 gives access to Doncaster to the south and Selby and York to the north, while the M62 connects to Leeds in the west and Hull to the east.
