Natland is approximately 2 miles south of Kendal and around 1 mile west of Oxenholme. The village includes a historic core radiating from the village green, around which the village has developed. The English Place Names Society gives the derivation of Natland as the Old Norse 'Natlundr', meaning 'Nati's wood', Nati being either a mythological name or a proper name, and Lundr meaning 'a small wood'. It's a name originating from the Scandinavian occupation in the 9th or 10th centuries. The earliest recorded use of the name is in 1164. Natland Hall farm was granted permission for a chapel in 1246.
In the 1170's, Natland formed part of lands gifted by Henry 2nd to Gervase Deincourt. It was later to be passed to the Strickland family by his great-granddaughter Elizabeth's marriage to Sir William Strickland in 1239. The Stricklands and their ancestral home at Sizergh Castle are familiar names to the area.
Most amenities will be found close by in Kendal town centre, including substantial retailers such as Marks & Spencer, Booths, and Asda, alongside a number of local independent retailers, various public houses, bars, and restaurants. In Natland village there is a primary school, and a village hall. There are three schools within a 5-mile radius of the site that have been rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted (2016-2018), including Old Hutton CofE Primary School, Crosthwaite CofE Primary School, and Cambian Whinfell Independent School. There are an additional 14 schools that have been rated as ‘Good’ (2016-2019) within the same radius.
Natland has access to local transport infrastructure. Oxenholme Lake District railway station is located approximately 1.5 miles to the North East and offers direct services to London Euston, Edinburgh, Glasgow Central, Manchester Airport, and Birmingham Central. There are limited local bus services providing access to Lancaster, Windermere, Penrith and Kendal. A bus stop is located 0.2 miles north of the development, for service between Kendal and Arnside.
