Housebuilder gives pupils book vouchers to mark World Book Day

A housebuilder in Congleton has proved itself to be on the same page as a local school by donating £165 in vouchers to mark World Book Day.

Jones Homes has paid for a £5 book token to be given to all 33 pupils in Year 6 at Havannah Primary School in the town, as part of the book-related celebrations on Thursday 2 March.

The developer is building 232 new homes at Westlow Heath, off Manchester Road, Congleton, just a short distance from the school in Malhamdale Road.

Kate Naylor, a sales advisor at the development, visited the school on Friday 17 February to hand over the tokens.

Clare Birdsall, Year Six Class Teacher and the school’s Literacy Coordinator said: “We are very grateful to the team at Jones Homes for this kind gesture.  We greatly encourage “Reading for Pleasure” and so this opportunity can only enhance our pupil’s enjoyment of reading.”

Simon Whalley, Sales Director at Jones Homes North West, said: “Havannah Primary School is only a short distance from our development at Westlow Heath and we felt it was important to reach out to the school as a means of giving something back to the local community.

“World Book Day is a great national event to support because it gets a very serious message across about reading but manages to do so in a fun way. It is a day which celebrates books and reading and captures the imagination of school pupils throughout the country.

“We are happy to donate this money to help children buy a book and maybe discover a love of reading that could last a lifetime. In this digital age, it is more vital than ever that we encourage children to come away from the screen and sit down and read a book.”
