Local Area

Explore The Local Area & Amenities

People have been drawn to this attractive part of Derbyshire since Neolithic Man set up home here thousands of years ago – and new homes in Clowne and the surrounding area are popular to this day.

The story of how early humans settled in the locality is detailed at the excellent Creswell Crags archaeological park, which is four miles from Clowne. The place, which has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, is a spectacular magnesian limestone gorge that straddles the border between Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Visitors can walk in caves which feature Ice Age rock art, explore the gorge and learn about the area’s fascinating past in the on-site museum.

Clowne itself has seen its name change over its long history. It was first known as ‘Clun’ – believed to be a Celtic word meaning spring, in reference to the natural springs found in the area – but it has also been known as Clune, Clon, Clouen and Clown.

Nowadays, Clowne is a busy community of around 8,000 people, surrounded by the beautiful Derbyshire countryside and just over a mile from the new homes at Van Dyk Village.

But one of the area’s most notable landmarks is right on the doorstep of the development. The 69-room Van Dyk by Wildes hotel is as popular with the locals as it with overnight guests, and features a spa, brasserie and regular entertainment.

Clowne has its roots in the past, something which can be seen in the ancient tradition of well-dressing, which still takes place here thanks to local volunteers. However, there’s also everything you could need for modern life too.

Schools in Clowne cater for children from nursery up to age 16, while there are sixth form options in nearby towns.

Clowne has a good range of local shops and services. The Springs Health Centre in Recreation Close offers a number of GP services as well as a patient participation group.

Aldi and Tesco supermarkets have the weekly shop and fuel top-up covered while Clowne’s selection of shops, cafes and pubs are great places to meet neighbours and friends for a catch up.

On the edge of Clowne is the very popular Dobbies Garden Centre, which also has a number of retailers in store such as Cotton Traders and Holland and Barrett, as well as a food hall, a restaurant and a soft play area.

Meanwhile, those looking for a day out shopping can make the half-hour car journey to Meadowhall in Sheffield, where there are more than 250 shops, 50 places to eat and drink and an 11-screen cinema.

For sports fans there is plenty to watch or get involved in within Clowne. Clowne Town Cricket Club and Clowne Wanderers Football Club are based locally, while the excellent Bondhay Golf Club, with its 18-hole par-72 championship course and nine-hole academy course, is just a short drive away.  Anglers will fall hook, line and sinker for the challenge offered at nearby Harlesthorpe Dam.

There are good transport links nearby which make getting out and about very easy. Clowne is an eight-minute drive from junction 30 of the M1 and is just nine miles from Chesterfield train station which offers services to a host of destinations including Nottingham, Liverpool, Sheffield and London.

Those looking at new homes in Clowne can find out more about the properties for sale at Van Dyk Village here.
